Red Donkey

 I have created Red Donkey alter ego after a painting from 2003. I've been working with animals and some other more less fantastic creatures since the 1990's, during the Periodo Especial in Havana, Cuba. In the midst of readings by George Orwell, Herman Hesse and Thomas Mann. From the first I relied most on his Animal Farm to draw similarities with situations and characters found in Cuba's daily life. The figure of Red Donkey, as well, although in a lesser degree, the rat and the worm, are indebted to Animal Farm. I connected with the weight of Hesse's psychological confusion, intensity and dream like description of frustrations and past events. i walked around Havana's Central Park with Mann's Doctor Faustus scene in which the pianist met the devil for the first time. I felt and I knew that the devil was there and that I should not chose to be Dr. Faustus. Which in ordinary language means not to choose disease and self-destruction in exchange for creative powers.
