The Cabeza Series started after I lost my head in the US. In the year 1998 I decided to over stay my 45 days visa to the US. I was invited by a gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to participate in a show at a gallery called Plan B. We were part of an art festival reuniting various disciplines such as painting, film and teather. I remember that my two fellow Cuban artists and I where showing our paintings while in the stage that was part of the cultural center Cco Fusco was performing one of her fabolous plays. A month after I went to visit my family in West New York, New Jersey and couch surfed my way for another month during wich i was able to sell some paintings and get to rent an one bedroom apartment. I also found a studio space in Union City that I still keep. 3-4 years later I moved to New York. The Cabeza Series acrylics on canvas are the representation of the feeling of displacement and loss that befalls the immigrant in his first years of his new life in a different country. After more than 20 years living and working in the US I feel like I'm pretty much an American born in Cuba. But my head will never settle completely in this world although I cannot say is still lost. Somehow I have managed to recover my head.
